Black/White Agatized Coral, Garnet, 14K Accent .925 Earrings

Gem and mineral collectors as well as fossil collectors place a high value on agatized fossil coral. The term "agatized" refers to the translucent chalcedony type known as "agate," which is marked by banding and rich coloring, characteristics that are typical of agates all over the world. Agates have very small crystals (micro- or cryptocrystalline), and are translucent. Agatized corals are fossils created when groundwater silica replaces old, submerged corals (as opposed to typical calcite-replaced fossil corals). They are made up of void fossils that have had various types of quartz (another name for silica) filled in them.
